Marriage Laws for Minors: A Guide for Your Friend's Situation

Question
Im not sure if you will be able to answer my question or not. A friend wanted me to look up some info on this situation and I cant really seem to find anything that really helps so I was hoping that u would know or know where abouts I could find out some info on this. My friend is 16 years old he is already out on his own supporting himself ect. He is dating this girl he has known his whole life and they've been 2gether since 4ever and she is already 18 and legal to get married. They are technically engaged and he wants to marry her but does not know if that is possible or not. The question would be if a 16 year old is already out on his own and supporting himself does he still need the consent of a legal guardian/parent to get married if he is his own legal guardian?

Answer
Dear Mandy,

If would be helpful to know what state you are emailing from this way I could give you an exact answer, but I don't know. I will give you some examples...

In NY you have to 18 years old. If you are 16 or 17 you need parental consent.

In Oregon you have to be atleast 17 years old, no exceptions and you need parental consent.

To see what info there is for your state visit http://www.equalityinmarriage.org/nrremar.html

Most states require that both individuals be atleast 18 years old.

If your friend wants to marry at his age he will need both of his parents permission.

The only other option MAY BE his emancipation from his parents which you can goole info on.

I hope this helps.
