Dealing with Resentment After a Hurtful Comment from Your Spouse

Question
I have been harboring a huge resentment against my husband for the entire 8 years we've been married.  Shortly before our wedding I asked him (in a teasing fashion) if his ex was prettier than me.  I wasn't prepared for his answer -- he answered yes!!  Now I am aware that it was a stupid question, but I can't forget his answer.  I feel hurt that he feels this way and I resent his bluntness.  I've tried to move past this, but my very low self esteem won't let me.  I've always been insecure about my looks, and his reply dragged all of my old feelings of inadequacy to the top.  I want to get over this ... please help me to take responsibility for my feelings!  Thank you for reading .....

Answer
Hi Elise~

Does he know how you truly feel about his insensitive comment?  If not, then you should sit him down and explain to him, exactly how this has made you feel.  And b/c of it you have a lot of resentment towards him.

The only other thing that I can suggest to you, would be to get some individual therapy in order for you to deal with your low self esteem issue.  Only then, will you be able to get over this and move forward.
