QuestionWhat is the purpose of the waiting period for a marriage license? I live in MN and the wait is 5 days. I am just curious, why does it vary from state to state, and what exactly are they doing during these 5 days? Thank you for any information you have!

I'm not sure the whole reasoning behind it. Not all states do this. I do know that Miami, Oklahoma you can apply for a marriage license, get married in the same day, within a few minutes of applying for the license, and also Las Vegas, Nevada. But typically the waiting period is a standard 5 days in my states and counties. Possibly b/c they want to make sure that you do want to get married, and even do a background check to make sure that neither party is still legally married.
