-----Question-----
Have been separated over 11 yrs. We live in completely different areas, not even the same state. I was told that after a certain amount of time like this a marraige would be considered like a divorce in Calif. Is this true? Especially since he has very bad health problems and if he would die would I be held accountable for all his bills?

Hi Stacy~
No, even in CA it's not an automatic divorce (no states do this). You still must obtain a legal divorce by going before a judge. It's not that hard to get a divorce. The only problem that draws out the divorce process is when it's contested--and then it can end up costing more time and money to get one.
Here is a great divorce web site. It is: www.divorcenet.com click on the state in which you reside. It will give you divorce laws of your state, along with other info you may find helpful.
AnswerHi Stacy~
It's not a legal separation unless you've gone to court to make it a legal separation. It's just considered a separation. A legal separation is just a fancy term for going to court and starting the divorce process by legally separating, so that each party protects themselves and property, etc.
