Parental Rights & Custody: What Single Mothers Need to Know
QuestionI am a single mom, never married. My son is 6 months old. His birth certificate names a different father than his biological father. the biological father got a dna test done and proved my son is his son. now he wants custody and/or visitation. my son has been in my care since birth and i want to know if he can just take him away from me?
AnswerDear Jackie,
I suggest that you call an family law attorney right away. They will know exactly what your rights are and how you can go about handling any situation that comes your way. Many will not charge until later or have financial plans. I would call several of them in your area and see which one fits your needs the best. You have to find a lawyer who is right for you. It is like finding a doctor or therapist. You must find the one who is compatible with you. Make sure if you get a mediator, that you pay for the service. The mediators usually take the side of whoever pays for his service. This is not the right thing for them to do, although many of them do this to their own advantage.
Take care and good luck!
