QuestionI am 17 and I am sort of being forced to get married in order to be emancipated. My mother doesn't want me at home anymore and she feels this is the only way to do it. I don't mind because I love my boyfriend, but I was wondering what exactlty is going to happen to me. Will I be a legal adult once I get married and do I have to live with my spouse( who currently lives with his mom) or can I live with my friend?
Thank You :)
AnswerHi Krystal.
I am unable to tell you what will happen, because I do not know where you live and what the laws are there. The very thought that your mother does not want you around anymore somewhat takes me by surprise, as this is not something I could entertain, unless you were a total criminal, which I am pretty sure you are not. You would have to take a look at the legal implications of your country and see whether 17 is old enough to be considered an adult.
If your mother does not want you anymore then why not simply move out without getting married, until you feel that it is time to take that very large step yourself.
You mention that your mother feels this is the only way to do it, but what about you? I'm pretty sure that you should have a say in this as well.
I would love to see exactly why your mother feels that at 17 , you should be "on your way". I am still having trouble understanding that, considering that you are not even an adult yet.
Although I may be going out on a limb here, I think you should do what is necessary to be able to make the decisions on your own, and not get married out of sheer convenience for your mother.
