Navigating Discussions About Starting a Family: A Relationship Perspective

Question
My boyfriend and I have been together off and on for about 4 years. We both went to separate colleges and figured we'd each find someone else and move on.. but in the end we still managed to come back to each other. We both graduated recently and now are together, I suppose, officially.

He's made a few comments before, such as "How many kids are we going to have?" or "Are you ready to start making babies?"

Mostly said in a joke type manner.

But then one day I said, "I'm not having any kids til I'm married" and he got defensive and somewhat abrasive. Since then, whenever I make jokes about us getting married .... he gets very quiet and pretends to not hear the comments.

How can you want to have kids but not get married?

I don't push it because I don't want to get married or have kids right now, but it's something I have been thinking about, because I recently was told by the doctor that I probably can not get pregnant naturally, because I don't ovulate. (I haven't had a period in about 4 years.)

I'm 23 and he's 24.

Answer
If he does not know you do not ovulate, you should tell him.

Maybe your boyfriend is a postmodern man. This means he is one of many who does not believe in traditional marriage and the signficance of it. He thinks one can have sex, children, etc. and not be married.

If you plan to spend your life with someone, it helps to share the same values and beliefs.
