Identifying Antique Ring Markings: Birmingham Assay & Gold Content
QuestionHi, I recently purchased an antique (hopefully) ring with the following markings: Backwards capital K with an anchor to the right of it sloping a bit downwards. These markings are encased in a rounded-edge rectangle and the color of the gold is pink/rose. There is no metal content hallmark. Can you tell me if this is an "official" Birmingham mark and if so, approximately the year? Any idea of what the gold content would be for that time period? Thank you
AnswerHello Karolyn and thank you for your inquiry. It would be difficult to tell for sure about the hallmark. The anchor on the side is one of the Birmingham marks for gold (possibly 22kt) but various other marks were combined with the anchor. I would suggest a book called Pocket Edition Jackson's Hallmarks by Ian Pickford. It is a small relatively inexpensive book that includes maker's marks as well as assay information. You may be able to get it at amazon.com or at your local library. Sorry I couldn't help you further and good luck !
