Decoding Your Sterling Silver Ring: What the 'GW' Maker's Mark Reveals

Question
I have a ring by at appears to be old judging by the wear of the band. It is marked "Sterling" then a "GW". I would love to know more about it. Can you help? Deb.

Answer
Thank you for your inquiry. You already know your band is Sterling 925 silver and the GW is probably the manufacturer/designer of the item. The design of the ring will make a difference i.e. is it Victorian ? Mexican ? any other marks ? The only  GW I have located was used by Gruen Watch Makers Guild in Cincinnati, Ohio c. 1930's. They used G.W. Co. and G.W. Mfg. Co. I don't know whether they made other types of jewelry. It is also possible this is the inscription of the original owner. I will keep your inquiry active and if I find any other information, will let you know.  Enjoy your ring !
