Identifying a Vintage Diamond Ring: Understanding Makers Marks & Potential Origins
QuestionI recently acquired a white 14K diamond ring. It looks to be from the art deco period. The inside of the band has a stamp of "1.87" which I am taking as the diamond karat weight and another mark of "JTC". The top of the T is elongated and is above and over the J and C. I wondered at first if this could be a Tiffany piece because the T is the predominant character.
I did read your response to another inquiry stating this was probably the recepient's initials, but I think it is too much of a coincidence to have the same initials in my ring.
AnswerHello Cindy and thank you for your inquiry. I have not been able to locate the JTC mark. There are several manufacturers using a similar logo with the large "T" with initials on either side, but no "JC". Tiffany did not use a mark like this - most of their jewelry has the name and a register number scratched into the metal. They do use an overlay mark T&C inside a circle as well as several "location" marks, but none similar or using JTC. I have checked my resources in several different ways still coming up with nothing. It is possible that it is European and you might check a book by Ginger Moro on European designer jewelry. It is usually in libraries and can be purchased at amazon.com. You might also try an estate jewelry appraiser. Wish I could help you further but if I do locate anything, I will let you know. Enjoy your ring !
