Identifying Antique Gold Ring: Anchor & 'K' Hallmark - Birmingham?

Question
Hi
I recently picked up a garnety ring that might be 9ct gold.  It has an anchor at an 45 degree angle followed by a capital K right next to it in the same box.  There are no other hallmarks, etc.  Can you advise - I don't think that it is English because it does not follow the standard English hallmark method.

Answer
Hello Brian and thank you for your inquiry. The only mark with an anchor "on its side" that I know of is the Birmingham England mark. However, I can find no "K" mark. Is it in a box or a shield ? 9ct gold was frequently used in European jewelry. You might try the pocket edition of Jackson's Hallmarks by Ian Pickford. It is a small book but lists a lot of English and European marks for gold and silver. You may be able to match up your mark there. Sorry I couldn't be of any further assistance and good luck. Enjoy your ring !
