RFB Hallmark on Antique Gold/Ruby Earrings: What It Means and How to Verify

Question
Hi,

I have been given a pair of antique gold/ruby looking stud earings which are very old.  The only hallmark on them (that I can see) is R F B, any idea what this means?

Thanks, in advance

Jolie

Answer
Hello Jolie and thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a company with R.F.B. as their mark.  Older companies sometimes did not register their mark unless the item was gold or silver and then it was difficult to mark earrings. The mark is probably the manufacturer or designer. It was also common to put ones initials or monogram inside jewelry items but usually not on earrings.  If you believe they are gold, you should have them tested also for authentic stones. Often a jeweler or estate appraiser will have come upon the mark at some time and hopefully remember.  Check with your local antique mall or museum for a referral who could test them for you. I will keep your inquiry active in the event I find some helpful information. In the meantime, enjoy your earrings !
