Proposing Without a Ring? What to Consider

Question
Is it acceptable for a man to ask a woman to marry him even though he doesn't have an engagement ring in hand to give her at that moment?  Or, should he absolutely have a ring when he proposes?

Answer
Dear waiting to be engaged,

From what I have heard there are two ways to go about it.

1. Ask her with ring in hand...or
2. Ask her without the ring but go directly to a jeweler to have her pick one out.
or...this is a third option,
you could give her a, let's say cracker jack box ring with a note attached saying I want us to pick the real one out together.

Tradition is that you have one ready to place on her finger when you ask. However, in today's picky feminine world you may be better served by having her choose on her own.
