Mexican Divorce Laws for UK Citizens: Understanding Your Rights
QuestionHello! I am 31 year old English citizen. I got married in Mexico 6 years ago. Woman is an English citizen as well. After that I didn't attest my marriage documents back home (in UK). Now we are splitting up and I am wondering if I am still married according to Mexican law. Can you help me with any information? I am looking forward to hearing from you very much. Best regards, Martin.
AnswerHi Martin~
Even though you married in Mexico, your marriage is still legal and binding in all countries. So, yes, you're still married. All you have to do is to file for a divorce in the UK, and follow their (of the UK) laws to legally obtain a divorce . You don't have to file any marriage documents in your home country for the marriage to be recognized. The marriage in Mexico is legal, binding and valid if you have a marriage certificate that was signed by a clergyman and filed with the Mexican government, etc. I hope this helps answer your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.
