QuestionI have recently aquired a ring from a relative, she told me that it was a CZ and the mount was 10k gold. When I examined the ring I noticed that it said 10k RL on the inside of the band. What does this mean? Is it real gold?
Thank you, Kat
AnswerKat, Personally I don't believe you have anything to worry about. Are you in the USA? If so, there is federal law regulating how jewelry is marked. This applies to rings made in the country and to those made outside the country for import into the country.
Simply stated, the law does not require a karat mark on jewelry. However...and this is the important part, the law says that IF a karat mark is in a ring, the maker of the ring must also stamp the ring with the "makers mark", the essential ID of the company making the ring.
I believe what you have is a 10karat gold ring with the mark of the maker beside it, the RL.
RL is not a recognized mark for gold quality. 14k is.
So, there you go! Rest easy. I belive you are in fine shape here!
