Navigating Complex Family Dynamics: Exploring the Possibility of Marriage to Your Aunt

Question
I am unmarried and 26 years old. I love my aunty very much. My uncle got expired. They had 2 kids. I love my aunty so much that I cant bear the pain(hurdles) she is facing in life without her husband(my uncle). I really want to give support to her and her 2 kids. I want to marry her. I am not able to express my view to anybody. Even I have not expressed my views to my aunty. I want to know that such relationship can exists? If yes or if it is possible how to approach for it.

Answer
Hi Harish~

It's not unusual for this type of relationship to come about.  In some states it's illegal for certain family members to marry.  But that's usually first cousins or brother/sisters.  I don't know of any law that says you can't marry your aunt or uncle.

Do you want to marry her b/c you love her?  Or do you want to marry her to take on the responsiblity to help support her and the children?  There are two differences here.  If you do love her, then she should know how you feel about her, perhaps she'll return the feelings to you.  But if you just want to marry her to help take care of her financially, then perhaps just helping her out with things would be much more appropriate than wanting to marry her.

Whatever option you choose, your aunt has to agree to it and support the idea of being in a relationship with you.  So I'd suggest that you first talk with her and see how she feels about this.  You can take it from there.
