Understanding Miscarriage Duration & Symptoms After Blighted Ovum Diagnosis

Question
How long does a miscarriage typically last?  I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum at 9 weeks.  Two days ago, at 12 weeks, I began to spot.  Yesterday the bleeding was extremely heavy for about 5 hours, accompanied by severe cramps and clotting, but by evening had tapered off and today it's negligible.  Is it possible that it's all over?  I was booked for a medically managed miscarriage tomorrow, but have cancelled it until I know whether it's necessary or not anymore.

Answer
Hi Ann,
It sounds likely you've had a complete miscarriage. Have you made an appointment to get some medical advice? If not then I recommend that you do this so you get the proper aftercare.

The bleeding should stop after a few days and you can expect your first MP in 4 to 8wks. Don't be suprised if it's heavier or lighter than usual.
In the meantime if you should start to feel unwell, develop a temperature, notice an unusual and/or ful smelling discharge or start bleeding heavily again the do seek medical advice striaght away.

It sounds like you're over the worst physically. You'll probably feel quite tired and washed out, so do eat well, get plenty of rest and if you can take take some time off of work to give yourself some time and space to start healing emotionally too.

It's recomended that you wait 3 months until you try again. This is very wise asit allows you to heal mentally and physically. Then if you want to, you can look forward to the furture and try again.

I wish you the very best of luck. Please come back if you need any more help.

Kindest Regards
