Early Pregnancy Symptoms & Concerns: What To Do

Question
Hi there,

First of all.. I am a 20 year old, almost 21 year old female. My boyfriend and I have been together for 2 and a half years; however, because we did not want to risk pregnancy we chose to "not" have it. Not meaning, rarely.. maybe 10 times in those years. The first week of January we were fooling around and I think I may have become pregnant. I had just ended my period the day before, so in saying this I should be due for my period in another week. Today, I went to the bathroom and noticed almost a blood clot. I have done my research and know that this means either implantation bleeding or miscarriage bleeding. Although I would not consider abortion, I am okay with having a miscarriage only a couple of days into being pregnant. (I am sorry this is just my belief). The reason I think it may be a miscarriage is that I drank last night.. about 6 shots. I am so sorry if this is hard to understand. I need someone to talk to .. could this be a miscarriage? I cannot be pregnant; I know I am almost of age but I can't. My boyfriend and I currently live with my parents while attending University. I have no job and my parents still think I am a virgin. Please help me..

Nicole

Answer
Nicole,

A blood clot does not mean implantation bleed or miscarriage alone. It could be a number of other reasons. Only a pregnancy test will determine if you are pregnant or not, although it is very probably too soon to get a true result yet. As you had intercourse 1 day after your period it is possible you could have concieved if the womb had not completely emptied, although the chances would be slim. As you had stopped bleeding it would be safe to assume your womb, and its menstrual contents had emptied. That means there would not be another egg produced for 10-14 days, if you are regular. Sperm can only stay fertile inside you for about 6 days, so therefore it would not come into contact with the new egg. Although I think you are probably not pregnant, it doesnt mean this is a safe time to have sex if you are trying to avoid pregnancy. Unprotected safe will result in pregnancy, maybe not this time, but there is no sure time to have it if you are avoiding pregnancy. Get yourself some contraception and let this scare be a lesson to you and your partner.

If your period does not show up on time, do a test, but understand stress can delay the mestrual cycle. Therefore, you might find yourself late, or even missing a period this month as you are understanably worried about all of this.

I hope that you are not pregnant, and I hope that you will take better precautions in future.

Kind regards,

Christine
