Acrylic Nail Lifting: Causes, Prevention & What to Do

Question
Hi, I am quite a novice when it comes to different types of nail systems so I hope you can help.
I have managed to grow my own nails (and I might add about time) and was recommended to have arylic overlay (hope thats the right terminoligy) well I did, ok for the first two days loved them, now I have noticed lifting on most nails some worse than others, I know they can lift but surely not in 2 days. I have been in touch via phone to the nail tech and she says that she hasn't seen this before and it might be something to do with my nails, is this right and should I have to pay again when I have to have them put right.
Sorry its so long but it could have been worse I may have to have spoken personally to you.
Many thanks Georgina.

Answer
You are right, if acrylic is lifting after only 2 days there is certanly a problem, if it isn't you (if you didn't pick or bite at nails, or if you didn't expose them to harsh consitions) this should be your techs fault. There is also a possibility for some unacounted reasons like excessivly oily nail plate or medication you might be taking.
Well, first of all i don't agree with your tech saying you have to pay for them to be reapplyied, if it was an application problem she should re-apply for free, so i would like to go over the preparation procedure with you, if you see any step that your tech didn't do you should point it out to her, because that can be the cause for lifting. A good preparation is the key to avoid lifting.
First of all the cuticles should be pushed back and the nail area near the cuticles should be scraped to remove any cuticles adhering to it. The the nail's shine should be remove by gently filling the surface with a buffing block or a soft file, the dust should be removed and the nail should be dehydrated (to remove remaining oils), this can be done either by spaying with a dehydrating agent or by scrubing with a wipe soaked in the dehydrating agent. Then primer should be applyied, this is a liquid that usually comes in a brown glass bottle that should be applied avoiding the cuticles and leaves the nail charlky white after it has dryed.
Another mistake commonly made by nail techs that can make nail lift very fast is applying the acrylic too near or over the cuticles.
If she negleted any important step or made any mistake concerning application you should point this out so that she realizes you shouldn't pay to have them re-applyed. If this doesn't happend you should consider she isn't very professional.
If she didn't make any mistakes them she should try to figure out the problem.
Hope i could help, plese don't hesitate to contact me again if you have any other questions.
