Biogel Nail Damage: What to Do When You've Injured Your Nail Bed

QUESTION: Hello,

You recently posted a question to Brooke Gilliam in category Nail Care & Manicures:

I have had biogel nails done for years at a very reputable salon.  I had some dirt under my thumbnail so I stupidly took a toothpick and was over zealous in cleaning under my nail...the area under my nail in the corner where I was prodding is red and I even took some skin away on the pad of the thumbnail in the corner under the gel nail tip...now it is sore and you can see into my nailbed..there is a whitish area on my pink gel thumbnail in the corner...this is probably lifted...will this grow out?....do I
have to take these biogel nails off?...my tech sais to stop picking and I can leave them on...should I put something under my nail tip where it is separating(solar oil)????...will it grow out and how long will it take to reattach?  Dianne

ANSWER: Hi Dianna,

Indeed stop playing doctor with tooth picks for starters hahaha, it is very simple if you wish to keep them keep a close eye on the color which should not change to brown or green. Make sure you keep it clean. you also should avoid touching water from ponds or matters that could contaminate under the skin.

It will grow out and I think the white part is indeed lifted, as far as I can see you will live to see the nail growing out and you will have a new set.

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply.....do I have to take the gels off if it is lifting slightly on my thumbnail?  How long does it take to grow out?  Dianne

Answer
You do not have to take them off just keep the nail short as it lifted it is prone to get stuck somewhere and pain will be the reward.

The growing out will be a matter of time could be a month but you will need a back fill anyway so your tech will have a better view of what to do.
