Acrylic Nails & Gel Polish: A User's Experience and Potential Issues

Question
QUESTION: I had a French manicure using acrylic and tips. The nail tech applied the ph bonder ontop of the dried and buffed acrylic and then proceeded with the GELISH top it off top coat. Cured in the gelish lamp. Turned out great. 2 weeks pass and I go today for my fill. I decide I want black polish painted over the white tips and then proceed with the gel top coat. Only this time it is a different nail tech and he uses a uv gel that is in a container and u use a brush to dip in and pick up the gel. So he did not use the gelish bottle of top it off. He cured it in a different non gelish lamp for 3 min. Then used 71% rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky residue. It looked dried out when I got home. So I applied a layer of the top it off gelish and cured it for 2 min. In a uv lamp. About an hour later, the clear part of my nailbed ( still French style) has turned a brownish buff color. Almost like a brown bruise. How do I fix this or what should I do? I'm afraid I messed it up!

ANSWER: Hi NailAddict,

I understand that the product on your nails has become discolored because different types of products were used. With out seeing your nails, it sounds as if you have a chemical reaction of some kind. In the nail industry individual companies systems are design to work together and not with other companies systems. I really don't know what the second person used on you but it sounds like you had, acrylic, polish, gel(sounds like a enhancement type) and then a gel polish all mixed together and probably from different manufacturers. I would advise you to do two things soak off all the old product and start again or go to a quality nail tech(not a cheep salon)and have them thin the old product and correct the issue. Nail professionals in most cases are trained properly to use systems correctly, how ever in the cheaper salons most are not trained properly. Since you are using professional products I would also advise you to be careful with them or maybe go to school to learn to do nails. This is one of the main reasons professional nail products shouldn't be sold to the general public so issues do not happen.
Thank you
Karen

QUESTION: Thank you for the answer. I went back and had them fix the issue. It was a reaction and they used a drill to lightly shave off the gel layer. Sure enough the brown came off too. Redid my nails with a regular top cost for No Charge. BUT, I will be making it a point to Never go back. I will find a professional place and just pay more for a genuine quality product and service. Also so weird you mentioned nail school because I have been looking into picking a school to attend! 😄😊

Thanks again!
