Nail Prep for Gel & Acrylic: Best Practices for Technicians

Question
Hi Sylvia,
I'm a technician that just starting out, I did a nails course and in the course i was trained to ruff back the natural nail as part of prepping so it would adhere better, but form what I've been reading on this sight maybe i shouldn't be or it just isn't necessary.

Answer
Hi Terri-Anne,

If you mean ruff back to file back towards the cuticle indeed it is better not to do this  for prepping although it is not dangerous. The Nail itself can be compared with the scales of a fish which better to be filed with their direction which is towards the free edge.

It will not help you prepping as the sole reason for filing the natural nail will be to remove the oil from the nail plate.
