Gel Nail Removal: Risks of Filing vs. Soaking - A Cautionary Tale

Question
I have been having Biosculpt for about 6 weeks,i go to my friend who works in a salon and she does them for me.I have had the biosculpt soaked off twice in this amount of time and had it applied 3 times.I went along yesterday to have a new colour on after 2 weeks of the same colour which i no longer wanted for some speacial occassions coming up.My friend decides she does not want to soak the sculpt off and instead files it off with a nail file which did really hurt on some of my nails and i had to tell her to stop,on inspection i could see 2 of my nails had red marks almost as if i could see the flesh under the nail and it looked irritated, she then decides to soak off the rest as i found filing too painful and the remover solution stung really badly and i felt shooting pains up my hand and arm (i have quite a high pain tolerance but that was awful) so i had to put up with that until she could remove it and she filed the tips of my nails right down too,she kept saying my nails were weak but iv never had this problem before and couldnt help thinking it didnt help with the filing.
she instead of putting more gels on opted for a nail strengthener which i am glad about but my nails look a mess,Its my birthday in 2 weeks and i wanted them to look long and nice.I basically want to know if it was not good to file them down and if i am able to safely have biosculpt again before my birthday?
Hope you can help
thank you

Answer
Yes, it is safe to have gel nails filed off. BUT it has to be done carefully so as to file the gel, not the natural nails! Ouch! Sounds like she got carried away with the file and went too far!

Your nails are now damaged, and since nails aren't living tissue, they can't heal-- you'll have to wait until your nails grow out before those marks are gone.

I don't understand why she opted to file this time when she's always soaked them off before?

If the file marks aren't all the way through your nail plate-- so now skin is showing through the nail-- then you ought to be able to put the Bioscultp on again. Just make sure that they don't get filed off again! Only soaking!

And be prepared that with the natural nail thinned out like that, you may be more likely to experience heat spikes when you first put your hand into the lamp. It's a sudden heat caused by the gel beginning to polymerize when it's exposed to the light. Put your hand in front of the lamp for about 30 seconds, not IN the lamp, then slowly put your hand in the light for the full time. This way the gel starts curing a little more slowly and doesn't build up too much heat all at once.
