Nail Enhancements for Clients with Missing Toenails: A Professional Guide

Question
I have a new diabetic client with NO nail on the big toe.  Can an enhancement be placed over the "skin" to give the appearance of a nail?  If so, is it best to use acrylic or gel?  How long would the enhancement last, and is there a chance of infection? What procedure "steps" would you take in this instance?  Thanx in advance.

Answer
hello Brenda,

I've personally applied nail enhancement on a nail bed with no nail before, and the results were pretty good. I would use acrylic since I believe it hold better than gel, and how long it lasts depends, it could last weeks, it could fall off in a day, but I think it's worth a shot for the chance that you could provide your client with a semi-normal looking toenail. There isn't too much to worry about with infection since you are not working on an open wound, and I would  minimize the use of a drill in chance you nick your client.

The procedure that I normally take is clean the nail thoroughly, cut any excess cuticle and spray down with alcohol and let dry. Apply primer onto any nail or nail bed available. I would then sculpt the nail with acrylic powder, drill to even out the acrylic and the cuticle area buff and add a tad bit of oil. then spray again with alcohol , dry and polish!
