Identifying a Vintage Gold and Diamond Ring: Origin & Value

Question
Hi, I inherited a gold/diamond ring from my grandfather. The ring is hallmarked identically in 2 places with the follwing. A sheild which looks like a sheild of St John (with a cross) then the number 22 which I guess is the carat? then another sheild identical to the first. The diamond is set into the band (no claws)and appears to be a briliant cut. I am really intrested in knowing where this ring may have been made. My Grandfather was in the Navy and travelled a lot and I am wondering if he oicked it up somewhere on his journeys. Hope you can help.

Answer
G'day Darren and many thanks for your query

However the hallmarks are not UK (British) hallmarks and the shield stamp may come from just about anywhere.

You see there is NO central WORLD registry for hallmarks so anyone - anywhere - can make and stamp thier own creations.

Not that the manufacturer's in South Easy Asia would comply anyway. The double shield doesn't help, but as you say the 22 is probably the gold carat quality.

The diamond set into the band would be 'Bead or Grain' set and is very common.

Sorry I can't be of any more help. You might like to browse eBay or the Antique Jewelry Fair for something similar.

If you find out anything, please write it up in my blog at: http://how2valuejewelry.com/ so we can share it with other readers. Who knows, someone may have an answer for you...

Kind regards.
