Identifying a Vintage Navy Ring: Maker, History & Value

Question

navy ring maybe a sea
My Dad Left me his navy ring , he never talked much about it, and my mom said she never remembered seeing him wear it.
It's a heavy ring the stone is red not sure if it is real or not. Took it to a jeweler he didn't think it was a real Gem or not . That's not my question ( would like to know )I plan on going to a GIA appraiser soon.
My question is where it came from - Maker ect. Anything
On the inside is a marking - BARR PAT. JUN.8'26 14K My father was all over the world from 1934 until he retired from the navy in 1952. He was in Cuba before Castro - at Lake Hurst N.J. on the ground crew when the Hindenberg blew up 1936, Pear Harbor Dec. 7th on the Phoenix before the war he was in the South America area called it the Bannan Boat Fleet. During the war he was on a floting dry dock at one point on some lite crusers took McAuthe leave the Phillippines and helped Him return . Found out all kinds of things he never talked a lot about .Just never asked about the ring .He gave it to me 10-15 years before he pasted. I put in the safe and forgot it . I've contacted several groups / Navy didn't give rings . Said he would of bought it . I thought it might be a class ring or something along that line .Any help at all would really be great. Thanks Rick Dollar

Answer
Hello Rick and thank you for your inquiry. I checked on the name Barr but couldn't come up with any manufacturer by that name. That doesn't mean there isn't one - just not one that is/was registered under that name. It could have been a company that produced the rings for a short period of time and offered them to the military. I have listed a site below that gives various military collectible sites online and one of them might be able to help you. Just copy and paste it into your browser address field and hit enter.

Since it is 14K, it is a good idea to have it appraised by a gemologist but an estate jewelry appraiser might also be a good idea since they have a lot of professional resources for research that might lead you to more information. Sorry I couldn't be of any further assistance. Good luck with your research !
