QuestionQUESTION: I was given a very nice ring; however, it is about a size too small (unless I give up my wedding ring and wear it on that finger). It is rhodite. I live in a small community and the jeweler wasn't familiar with rhodite, but felt he wouldn't be able to re-size it for me. (He said he would only work with gold or silver.) Any help will be appreciated.

ANSWER: Cindy, before I even attempt to answer this question, you need to tell me two things. Are you talking about a gemstone in the ring, such as rhodolite? Are you talking about a material named "rhodite" that the ring is made of?
As for a material for making a ring, I have not heard of rhodite, either. As for gemstones, several have a similar name.
Please use the follow-up to get back to me.
Thanks and God Bless. Thomas.

QUESTION: Thomas,
In looking up Rhodite, which the ring is supposedly made of) it is a naturally occurring alloy ore from gold or a Rhodian variety of gold. The gemstone in the ring is an amethyst.
I hope this helps.
Respectfully,
Cindy
ANSWER: I am back___________________________________________________
Cindy, the net is confused with names. Much of what came up from a Rhodite search was rhodonite, a pinkish mineral. I did find a few references to Rhodite as a possible gold alloy containing up to 40% rhodium. If that is so, the ore would be worth more for the rhodium than for the gold by a large margin!
Honestly, I have never seen the material and have not heard of it until your question came in. I am suspicious of what it really is and if the name rhodite which does refer to an apparently real rhodium/gold native ore is being misused to promote some other metal.
I really need to see this stuff to say much more. I have not a clue how it looks or how it works or if it is even possible to form it other than by carving. Apparently it is a fairly brittle material.
Here is a web site with some slightly tech data:

I do wish I could help more. This one is totally new to me and I will really have to see it to know anything about it in actual jewelry use.
Sorry..Thomas gave it a good run but the rhodite won this time and kept most of its secrets.
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.

QUESTION: Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, but it's been an "interesting" week. Here is a photo of the ring. I hope this gives you some insight; however, I believe I am going to have to send it back to my sister and allow her to exchange it for a larger size. Unless the photo unlocks new information.
Thanks again.

Cindy, the ring looks like a normal metal to me but I cannot tell just what from a picture. Can you write back and tell me any markings you see inside the ring? Can you possibly tell me where the ring was purchased? I might be able to research it better that way. This might be matter of "name" more than whether or not it can be sized.
Exchange for the correct size might be the best course to follow at this point.
Thanks for the fine photo. The ring is quite lovely.
God Bless. Thomas.
