Decoding Your 14K Diamond Ring: What Does '1.5' Mean?

Question
I inherited a radiant cut diamond ring with pave diamonds down the side, it is marked 14k with a 1.5 on inside of band. Can you tell me what does the 1.5 mean?
Thank you

Answer
Janet, first of all you need to know the 1.5 is not one of the legal markings for precious metal jewelry such as metal quality(karat, etc.) and likely not a maker's mark which is required if the metal quality is indicated. There should be a makers mark somewhere near the 14k mark.

The 1.5 is most likely a designation placed in the ring by the maker for a particular purpose and could mean one of several different things, none of which are legally binding or required.

The most common use for numbers like this by manufacturers is for jewelry of which many of that kind may be made and represents a total weight of the gemstones. This is there for both the maker and the sales person to see.  However, generally the letters tw meaning "total weight" will  follow the numbers. These numbers are not always an accurate statement of the stone weight since stones may be removed and replaced due to a lost or damaged stone needing replacement or a mounting with the numbers stamped in the band being used for other sized stones in the first place.

Janet, with so little information to go on, there is really no way to give you an accurate answer as to what the 1.5 means.  If you need to know, the best approach is to have the ring appraised by a certified appraiser. The appraisal will give you stone identification, weights and quality and market value of the ring.  If the ring has what you consider enough value, insurance can be purchased for a reasonable amount.

I do wish you well with the inherited ring. Radiant cut gems are quite lovely.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
