Antique Ring Identification: Understanding '825' Markings & Style

Question
Hi! I also live in Central Florida! I inherited a ring from my great grandmother (we are originally from New England). It is what I believe to be a crystal or rhinestone cut in a large oval, elevated by 4 prongs and then surrounded by 16 small blackish stones that also sparkle. The metal surrounding the setting is scalloped like a flower and there are intricate cut outs in the metal that holds the stone underneath and on the sides of the ring. Inside the band the markings say "825" or "625" it's hard to read, and the cursive letter "D" in capital. What does this mean, and is the ring worth getting appraised? It's silver in color but has never tarnished. Thanks!

Answer
Hello Lisa and thank you for your inquiry. Your ring sounds beautiful. First you should determine if possible whether the ring is 825 or 625.  I have the following information on 625

"15K, 15ct or 625 (parts per 1000) or 62.5 % gold (British Commonwealth countries. Discontinued c1935. A good indicator that the piece is old.) "

The letter D could be the manufacturer, design or style or pertain to the original owner.  Since it is an heirloom you might want to have it appraised for your future generations.  I can recommend someone that may help you - Renis Paton an appraiser and estate handler in Maitland/Winter Park area.  Tell her Sally and Bill sent you.

Hope this helps and enjoy your ring !
