QuestionI've read your response re the 925 marking on silver. While my ring has that
marking, the metal has a finish that seemingly does not tarnish. In addition, it
activated the security alarm at airport security. Besides the 925 silver content,
what else is likely in the ring? (antique from Scotland)
AnswerThat's a very interesting question. New alloys are constantly being developed and I can't say what other metals are in your ring but germanium, zinc and platinum are used and some additives like silicon and boron are also included to help silver resist tarnish. The most common additional ingredient, however, is copper and it is very likely that at least some copper was used to create the alloy from which your ring was made.
Thanks for your question!
