Identifying Metal from Ring Markings: What Does a 'C' Inside a 'C' Indicate?

Question
my husband received a ring 25 years ago on the inside the marking resembles a c inside of a c and possibly a number inside or other marking inside the circle. would like to know what metal this is thank you

Answer
Dear Garthanna,

Unfortunately the information from inside the ring is not enough to determine the metal quality of the ring.  The marks appear to be related to the manufacturer.   Marks of metals will be the standard marks for precious metals, in the USA those being 10k and up for gold, also marked more recently with numerals such as 585 for 14k or 750 for 18k.  Sterling is 925 or an abbreviation of sterling.  Platinum is an abbreviation of platinum such as PT, with a numeral also is less than 95% pure platinum as in PT900.  Though an overlay and not precious metal, gold filled has a GF in the marking, such as 1/20 12k GF.

The best way at this point to find out more about the ring is to look very closely for a possible metal mark which might be difficult to see. If not there, then a visit to a jewelers who will test metals will tell the tale.   Call first to see if they test metals. With many jewelers buying gold today due to high market prices, more are set up to test the metals.  Ask the not to damage the ring when testing.

Sorry I can not really help.  With the marking provided there is no way to tell without the ring in hand.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
