Identifying Antique Rings: Is Your Ring Old & Valuable?

Question

pic1
Hi guys,
I have a ring that was given to my dad as a teenager by possibly an indian or egyptian man early 1960's, he wore it for a while but out grew it so put it away.several years later he met my mother who then wore it for many years, I was always facinated by this ring she wore silver high domed with a perhaps worn star ruby,it always looked worn out and was that way when my father first recieved it, i now have that ring some 40 plus years later and cannot find a hallmark any where to identify it. It is quite weighty at 6.34grams, i will supply a picture for youto look at, perhaps you can answer my question

Answer
Hello Darren and thank you for your inquiry.  Your ring does look very old and could be sterling silver. A lot of foreign jewelry especially silver was not marked and is difficult to trace. The stone could be a star ruby that has seen better days...and the setting looks like it may be cracked. Unless you can find a mark on the inside, there would be no way to get much more information other than possibly from a gemologist who might be able to tell you something about the stone and if the ring is, indeed, sterling. Hope this helps and sorry I couldn't tell you more.
