Navigating a Complex Relationship: A Marine's Dilemma

Question
Hello,

I am a 20 year old Marine stationed in Japan at the moment. I still have a year and a half left over here and before I left I only went to see my son because me and the mother were not dating. Finally the girl I was dating before I left for Japan last November cheated on me and me and the mother started talking more and more. I hurt her feelings a numerous amount of times by talking to the EX who cheated and one of the Mom's old friends, but I know she still Loves me for some dumb reason.I want to make it up to her and prove to her I can be everything she wants. I really want to make this work for me and her even though I am in Japan. I want to have a future with her and I plan on asking her to marry me. Can you please help me out. I would be pleased to have an opinion on this matter.

Answer
Well as always, communication is key. Write or call her and let her know of your desires and see how she feels. If there has been too much water under the bridge, then let her go and find someone else. Being away at your young age for extended periods of time doesn't bode well for keeping a relationship going, keep writing and talking and your desires might come to fruition. My son just headed off to Parris Island last week, I hope he gets Japan as opposed to Iran.

Take care,

Bill
