QuestionMy wife is age 29. We don't have any children. The date of her last menstrual period was Sept 20.
She has been spotting light pink/red - only in morning for the last few days. Since we found out she was preganat, she has had a yeast infection and she took took Monistat. She has also been quite sick for the last few weeks with cold symptons, light fever, and nausea. Her lungs are getting tighter every day and she feels terrible. She hasn't taken any medications besides generic tylenol. Her levels are as follows:
HCG levels
10/21 - 4 weeks 3 days - 624
10/23- 4 weeks 5 days - 1696
10/29- 5 weeks 4 days - 17769
11/2 - 6 weeks 1 day - 44970
Her nurse said it should be 45800. She is worried because she had miscarriage in June '04 and it seems like her doubling rate is slowing down. She lost the last one about the same time in the pregnancy. She has PCOS and has been taking Chlomid to help conceive. She had a D&C done in July.
Couple questions: Does it sound like she is at risk for another miscarriage? Her levels seem fine, but she is bleeding. Also, is there anything she can do/take to help with the cold symptons? I'm afraid it will turn into pnemonia or something.
I appreciate your help.
AnswerIf there is only mild spotting (light pink/red) it is probably of no consequence. If she starts to start heavy bleeding with cramping, it certainly may be the start of a miscarriage. However, her HCG values are steadily rising, and are, indeed, more than doubling. The risk of miscarriage is 15-20% of every pregnancy and you cannot do anything to cause a miscarriage or to prevent a miscarriage. Just be patient. Take Tylenol, Sudafed, and Robitussin for the cold and drink plenty of water. if you take a sonogram now, you should see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. Once you see a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage drops to 5%. Good Luck. Don't worry.
