C-Section & Amniotic Emboli: Understanding the Risks
QuestionThis will be my second c-section, my first was due to undetectable fetal heart tones, in which I had a classical c-section. I was told that I now must have a repeat c-scetion due to possible rupture of my uterus. Is there any greater chance with me having an amniotic emboli because I'm having a c-section
AnswerRepeat cesarean sections do not increase the risk of amniotic fluid emboli. Amniotic fluid emboli continue to be very rare occurrences with almost a 100% chance of maternal death. We perform repeat cesarean sections when the previous one was a classical section because the scar (incision line) is weaker and the risk of uterine rupture is great. I don't know why you had a classical section rather than a transverse incision in the uterus, which only has a 1% uterine rupture rate. In any case, it is safer in the long run to have a repeat cesarean section, with your history.
