Answer
Dear Ashish,

The short answer is - yes, I believe it is possible that she could still be pregnant. This is why...

You did not note that any protection was used for sexual activity which occurred 15 days after her last period. A woman's most fertile time is actually 11-21 days into her cycle, so this date of unprotected sex would be at increased risk for pregnancy.

Although the pregnancy test was negative, it sounds as if she would have barely been late with her period at that time. Tests taken very early in pregnancy can often give a "false negative" result. It also would have been important to make sure (especially when taken that early on) that 1st morning urine was used for the most concentrated sample and the most accurate result.

I assume when you are describing the pill she took 72 hours before your activity and 12 hours later, you are speaking of Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs). ECPs are high doses of the same hormones found in regular birth control pills and are considered safe. However, they are NOT recommended for use as a regular birth control method (thus, the name "emergency") and, in my opinion, are not near as reliable - particularly in cases where multiple instances of sexual activity have taken place. The very best statistic I've ever found was that ECPs prevented 75% of expected pregnancies, whereas birth control pills (with the same hormones) taken on a regular basis are typically more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. For this reason, I would not rely on ECPs as a regular birth control method.

My suggestion is to have her take another pregnancy test. Follow the directions exactly and make sure to use 1st morning urine (or urine that has been in the bladder for at least 4 hours). If that test is also negative, give it a few more weeks. ECPs often tend to cause a disruption in the menstrual cycle as a side effect and might delay periods. If she has not gotten a normal period after a few more weeks, I'd go to your local women's clinic/doctor's office for a more specific blood hCG (pregnancy) test - just to be sure. In the meantime, I would avoid any unprotected sex and use of ECPs until you know for sure.

I hope I've helped and I wish you both well!
