Abortion Risks with Bleeding Disorders: A Guide

Question
My brother's 18 year old girlfriend came to me because she is pregnant. She wants to have an abortion. She is eight weeks. She has a bleeding disorder. Are there any risks?

Answer
Dear Samantha,

Without knowing the particular bleeding disorder, I can't really answer this question specifically. Any surgical procedure requires special pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care when a pre-existing condition, especially a disorder affecting clotting factors, is involved.

She would need to have a pre-screening visit at the clinic in order to determine whether this would be a viable option and whether they are capable of dealing with her condition safely. She definitely would not want to put her own life at risk. Talking to her own personal physician, who is familiar with her condition, would also be an option.

I hope this has helped. Even though I had very limited information, the answer is essentially the same - she must ensure her own safety first by making sure her condition can be dealt with appropriately by the facility.

I wish you and your family a merry Christmas and wish you both well.

Brenda
