Early Period After Birth Control Stop: Possible Pregnancy?

Question
Hi!  I just had a question...my husband and I are VERY confused.  We decided to start trying to concieve in the middle of October, so I stopped taking my birth control on the 15th of October.  My last period before I stopped taking birth control started september 27th, however in October (after I stopped taking BC) it came a week early, on the 18th (it was suppose to come on the 25th).  So going 28 days from the 10/18, it should have come 11/15.  Today is the 17th, and I haven't gotten it yet, BUT I've taken several pregnancy tests, and they've all been negative.  I'm sure my body was just adjusting to not being on the pill, but I'm confused as to why it was early...then late.  Is it possible that I could be pregnant, but don't have enough of the pregnancy hormone in my system to tell yet?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Ayla!

Well you definately cannot rule out pregnancy in a circumstance such as yours. Anytime you miss a pill, or come off the pill you are open to get pregnant. So its definately a possibility to consider. However, given this point in time, if you were to take a pregnancy test, the result should come back accurate.

So, I think you should do a home pregnancy test to see where you stand with the pregnancy issue. However, I suggest that you do it first thing in the morning when you wake up. Morning urine, is far more concentrate then during the day. So if you are carrying the pregnancy hormone, it would definately be prominate, giving you an accurate, reliable result. Also, make sure you give the test full time allowance, for your result. Many times, ladies look at the stick 1-2 minutes after doing the test, see a negative result, and disgard the  test. Little do they know that, the test can turn to positive, right up to the last 45 seconds or so of the test. So full time allowance is essential :)

Now, if you are not pregnant, this is definately a hormonal imbalance all due to you coming off the pill. It is suggested that you wait 2-3 cycles (depends on the doctor) before trying to get pregnant when coming off birthcontrol. The reason why this is suggested, is to allow your hormones to return back to their natural state.

Now having early periods, late period, light periods, and even spotting is all very common when coming off birthcontrol. So, if you are not pregnant, dont be alarmed at all if your period is early, or you spot in between periods. This is all common, and it will subside, as your hormones return to normal.

Keep in mind, that while your hormones are trying to settle, it can be very difficult for you to determine exactly when you are ovulating. So perhaps, if you pick up an ovulation kit, this might be of huge help to you. They are not very expensive, and they are extremely accurate. You are able to test yourself, to determine exact ovulation, then having interourse on those days, gives you higher chances of conceiving. Food for thought, because if this is a hormonal issue, trying to determine when you ovulate, could be tough.

Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing!
