Questioni had a baby 4 months ago would it be safe since i know some situations will require heavy lifting etc. also is it safe to get vaccinated while breastfeeding and is it safe to continue nursing baby since i would probably get expose to disease
AnswerDear Brisa,
You're doing the same thing I did - whew! I wouldn't want to do it all again, but it is worth it!
If you had a vaginal delivery without complications, you should be fine to go back to clinical situations. Talk to your doctor for sure to make sure you have medical clearance.
As far as vaccines, it has to be taken on a case by case basis. For the most part, if it is a live vaccine, most would not recommend getting it while you breastfeed. But if it is an inactivated vaccine (such as the flu shot) you can, and SHOULD, receive it.
There is no question you will be exposed to more viruses and diseases in a clinical setting as a nursing student. But you simply have to follow universal precautions as you would any other time. You just have an extra incentive now! I can't stress diligent handwashing enough. And you can mask in particular situations where an airborne virus is known to be a risk. I honestly can't tell you that I was sick any more often as a student or in a hospital setting than I have been any other time in my life.
I hope I've helped answer your questions and I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!
Brenda
