Confused Pregnancy Test Results: What To Do?

Question
so about a week ago i was still about 4 days from my period and every morning i would feel sick and sometimes vomit. i felt sleepy alot. so i thought i should take a pregnacy test. so i did and i took the digital read out ones. and i got positive results. so being still 4 days away from my period i went to a place called planned parenthood to get a test but theres came out negative. when i did the home test i used the first morning urine and there it was late afternoon. and my stomach was cramping a a little and it almost felt like i was gonna start my period but nothing would come out just some discharge a little more than normal. and then abou 3 days later my stomach cramped really bad and i started my period. except that my period isnt doing what it normaly does it is normaly really heavy for the first 2 days then light after that for about 2 days but this time it was light and stoped for a bit then started really heavy for a day and now its stoping and really light all day today. what could be going could i still be pregnant or did i have a miscarriage? and what would be the reason for postive home test but not at the plan parenthood place?

Answer
Cassie,

I am so sorry for what you are dealing with.  Unfortunately, it sounds like you had what is called a chemical pregnancy with a very early loss.

That is the most likely cause of your home test being positive and the clinic's test being negative.  Typically home tests are much more sensitive than those that most clinics use, but the digital tests typically only pick up a level over 50.  If this had been the only thing that happened, I would say you could still be pregnant and their test just wasn't very sensitive.  However, since you have had bleeding I would lean more towards you having a loss.

The only way to know for sure is to take another test now, at home, with a first morning urine.  If it is negative, you have had a loss.

However, if it is positive still, your level should now be plenty high enough to come up at the clinic.

Some statistics say that over 50% of pregnancies end in loss, and most of those before the woman even knows she is pregnant.  Her period will come on time or only a day or two late.  I hope this is not what happened to you.
Good luck and I hope the best for you.
