Irregular Periods & Early Pregnancy: What Could It Be?

Question
hey andi,
I have a situation that I have a irregular period. My husband and I are tring to have a baby for less than 4 months. I used to get my period around 20th of every month (give or take a day or two). Then about 6 months ago I started to have my period on the 1st of every month, then once again last month I got my period on the 11th today is the 18th of may. I took a home pregnancy test on the 15 which was monday ,from walgreens and it came out negative. Can it be that im pregnant and that the test couldn't detect it yet? I'm scared that i might not be able to have kids but I know its too early to tell. I have read on a couple of fourms from other web sites and some say if you have an irregualr periods that means that your Infertile is that true? I have done my research and I or any family members have no past conceiving problem. Also I have bin buying the ovulation test too and most of the time that I take the test it comes out negative or with a faded line purplish color, but on the instuctions it says that in order for you to be ovulating both windows are sopose to be dark purple. But ither way when I saw the purplish line me and my husband had intercorse. Please help.
Thnx

Answer
Hi Lori,

just because you have irregular periods does NOT mean you are infertile. it just makes things a little harder to calculate, as you are finding out.

You may be ovulating at irregular times.

As far as the test coming back negative and being too early: yes that can happen, so you might want to retest. Sometimes your hormone level (hcG- human chorionic gonadotropin  the pregnancy hormone) is below 100 and most home tests pick up a level of about 100. Retry the home test.

Dont believe everything you read on the forums- those are just other people posting things and they do not necessarily know what they are talking about.

Yes it is too early to tell if you are having true infertility. Many doctors would tell you to keep trying for a year and THEN they would check into fertility problems. So anything up to a YEAR of trying is not considered abnormal for many doctors.

I would call your regular GYN doctor and see what they have to say about the irregular periods. Dont be scared that you are infertile... you still have some time to keep trying before anyone would consider it a problem. Maybe your doctor can recommend something to regulate your periods, or at least a better ovulation calendar of when you may be ovulating. Have you tried monitoring your body temperature to detect ovulation? Check with your doctor on this.

Good luck, hang in there! There may be NOTHING wrong and your timing is just not perfect.
