Spotting, Cramps & Bleeding While on NuvaRing: What Could It Mean?

Question
I've been on the Nuvaring birth control for the past 4 months and haven't experienced any problems or bleeding. My boyfriend and I usually have sex once a week and I've not had any problems associated with that. But over the last couple of weeks, I've had spotting occuring randomly, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. And just this week, I've experienced bad cramps, heavy bleeding and clotting, while still on the birth control. I was wondering if I might have had a possible miscarriage yesterday when I was doubled over in pain from the cramps, passed alot of blood and clots, including a rather large mass of some kind of tissue or matter (I don't know what it was, it was freakin me out!). I was afraid to examine it, for fear of it being my unborn child. I haven't taken a pregnancy test, so I have no idea if I was pregnant or not. Is there anyway to find out what happened? If I was pregnant?

Answer
Hi Melissa
The short answer is that theres no definate way of finding out if you were pregnant and experienced a miscarriage. hCG (the pregnancy hormone) can stay in the system for up to 4wks, so you could take a pregnancy test to see if it comes up positive, but this won't guarantee anything.

I'd advise a visit to your doctor just to make sure that everything is ok.

I'm sorry I can't give you a definite answer, but it's often difficult to diagnose once something has happened.
In the meantime, if you experience very heavy and painful bleeding, raised temperature & unusual/foul smelling discharge thyen please seek medical advice urgently.

If I can help with anything else, please feel free to contact me again.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
