Ovulation After Miscarriage: What to Expect & When to Try Again

Question
QUESTION: hi i have recentley had a miscarriage in feb this year was 5+2 had scan saw nothing so had regular blood work done and my hcg levels were dropping ok so dr called it a complete miscarriage, and during all this i was spotting etc..which all stopped then on the 10th march i got my frist period it was normal i.e hardly no clots,no pain only mild..so in my eyes a normal period,so as we are continuing ttc i tested for ovulation on the 18th and got a positive and againg today and again got a positive..and i know its not nothing to do with levels after the miscarriage because i done hpt and waited untill they were all negative..so what do you think is going on do you think my body has gone back to normal???i have for 1 cycle,im taking folic acid, ive lost weight since the miscarriage just trying to do everything i can to make sure it will be a healthy pg when it happens..

ANSWER: Hi Amanda
Just a couple of questions before I answer. Was 10th march the end of your spotting? What date did you have the scan to confirm the complete miscarriage? Did you have any heavier bleeding before the scan & if so can you remember when it was?

I also assume that your periods are regular.

Many thanks!
Sarah

QUESTION: hi sarah,no i stopped spotting on the 21st feb,yes i did have a scan to confrim complete miscarriage and regular blood work the last blood test was on the 5th march which the result was 84hcg and 2 days later i done a hpt which was negative...i think i know exactly when i miscarried because one night i had really bad pain in tummy on the 15th feb i had to take pain killers..i thought i was ovulating were we was ttc so the next day i done ov test and for 4 days they were positive,so i tested for pregnancy as i know you only ov for 2-3 days and got positive i done 7 tests lol,but by then i was alredy spotting so what i think has happend i find out i was pg when i miscarried on the 15th feb carried on spotting to the 21st febhad a scan on the 20th saw nothing apart from my womb being thicker so thet said i might not be as far gone as i thought and to come back at 6 weeks pg but in between this dates i had blood work done and the showed the hcg dropping so they done another scan on the 27th and showed nothing again and that is when the dr called it a complete miscarriage..i do think im ovulating because i have mild pains too..thanks.

Answer
Thanks Amanda
It sounds like ovulation. Once you have miscarried the body ovulates very quickly afterwards with most women. Going on the average 29 day cycle, this works out about right.
If you wish to start trying again, I would strongly recommend waiting. The least amount of time that is recommended is 1 month, but 3 months is normally recommended. This allows your body to heal & for your cycles to get back to normal, therefore reducing the chances of another miscarriage. My research has found that there appears to be a higher incidence of recurrent miscarriage in women who fall pregnant within 10wks of a loss than in women who fall pregnant after 3 months.

I know it seems an awful long time to wait, but it soon goes quickly. Keep taking your folic acid, eat well & look after yourself. Congratulations on your weight loss, being a healthy weight can really help & carrying a growing baby will really test your health & fitness! Don't worry about having a little extra stores though, these come in useful during pregnancy & as long as you stick to a healthy balanced diet, you shouldn't put on excessive weight.

I hope this has helped & wish you the best of luck.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
