Understanding Miscarriage & Recognizing Early Pregnancy Symptoms

Question
Hi. In May, of this year, I found out I was pregnant. On, June 27th, at exactly 8 weeks along, I started experiencing heavy bleeding and a trip to the hospital confirmed that I had already miscarried and I was now beginning to pass all the tissue. The bleeding only lasted a few days and it was only a week before my significant other and I started having sex again. It has now been 3 weeks since my trip the hospital and I started having early pregnancy symptoms again. (i.e. Breast tenderness etc). I didn't think it was possible, but I took a home pregnancy test and it came out with very dark positive lines. I'm thinking it could be residual hormones, but after so many weeks, and no new cycle, is it possible that I could actually be pregnant again? Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Becca
It's normally recommended that couples wait at least one full cycle before trying again, one of the reasons is so you;re able to work out dates and you're not left guessing!

It's very possible you could be pregnant. A woman is very fertile after miscarriage and if you have been 'caught' within the first few days of having sex, then this would be enough time for you to show a positive on a test. I will say that recurrent miscarriage is fairly common in mothers who fall pregnant quickly after a miscarriage. Another reason why it's advised to wait is to allow your body to heal & give your uterus a chance to build up its lining. Please do not worry about it, but just be aware of it.
It is also possible that it may be some remaining hCG in your system, but to be perfectly honest you wouldn't have a dark line on your test result at this later stage.

You need to go and see your doctor. They can then carry out some blood tests to check your hormone levels and give you a better idea of what's going on, but it most certainly looks like some good news for you.

I hope this has helped. Please do come back if I can help with anything else.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
