Recovering After a Miscarriage: What to Expect in the First Month

Question
Hi Christine, I dont know if you can help me or not.  But I thought I would give it a try.  I had a miscarriage at 6 1/2 weeks along (very early).  My husband and I had been trying for a second child for almost 6 years so losing this second one was extremely hard, but I have now come to terms with it.  In a few days I am due to have my menstrual cycle again and have been feeling kinda ill, so I figure it is coming.   My miscarriage was never confirmed.  I went to the doctor and he was rude and uncaring.  he just told me I was definately miscarrying and there was nothing I could do.  I came home that night and started bleeding bad and clots soon followed, so even though he was so rude I figured he was right and never returned back to him.  My question is this far after a miscarriage is it normal for your stomach to be really hard?  My stomach is so hard, its just not the same as it used to be.  Is that normal?  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Ashely,

Has the bleeding stopped? Do you have any pain? Have you taken a pregnancy test after the miscarriage to be sure you're not still pregnant?

Your doctor seems very unsympathetic towards your situation.

Having a hardened stomach could be because your menstrual cycle is due again. Often women can feel bloated at their time of the month. It maybe that you didnt really notice before, but now because you are looking for signs and changes you have noticed it more.

If you are still bleeding, or still having clots, then I would recommend that you see a docotr (preferably a different one) and check that all is ok. Sometimes when a lady has a miscarriage not all of it comes away and tiny pieces of tissue are left in the womb, which if left could form an infection. It may be that you need a scan to confirm that you've had a miscarriage, and that it was complete. A swelled abdomen could be an indicator that you have an infection, do you have other symptoms, discharge, pain? If you are due again in a few days, see if it arrives, and if the swelling of your stomach goes down. If not then have yourself checked to be sure.

Good luck to you and your husband,

Christine
