QuestionI'm 23 yrs old and i am currently pregnant. I'm not sure how far along i am but i would be no more than 6 weeks along. I had a normal period that stopped on last sunday then friday night i had several blood clots. in the end i ised a tampon so i could sleep. in the moring that tampon had a couple more clots on it and it was kinda a brownish color and one of the clots had this little sack attached. it was about a qauter inch long and cylinder like with a rounded end like a ball and it was an offwhite color. my boyfriends mom said that it was either a period that didn't take or i was just spotting. I called my friend who used to be a nurse and she said that it sounded like i had miscarried. as soon as my boyfriend got home from work sat night he took me to the emergency room. they did some tests and an exam. the tests came back that i was preganant and he said he couldn't tell if i had miscarried it, that there was no more bleeding, and then he referred me to an OB GYN. He told me to go as soon as possible. I'm little scared and worried. i didn't think i could get pregnant but now i am hoping that i was just spotting... does it sound like i was just spotting or could i have lost my baby?
AnswerDear Erin,
I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties. First time pregnancies can be a scary time, even when they proceed fairly "normally".
It sounds as if you did exactly the right thing in seeking medical care as soon as you had a concern. Many women experience bleeding early in pregnancy (often called implantation bleeding) and go on to have normal pregnancies. However, any time you pass tissue or clots early in pregnancy, it's best to seek medical care.
Unfortunately, I cannot definitively tell you one way or another whether you have experienced a miscarriage. Your ER was correct to refer you to an OB/GYN. I'm sure he/she will be able to tell you more after gently examining the cervix (opening into the uterus) and possibly performing an ultrasound. In the meantime, if you begin bleeding heavily again, especially with any clots or tissue, my advice would be to seek medical care. My suggestion would also be to use pads rather than introducing anything into the vaginal area.
Also, please remember that IF this turns out to be a miscarriage, it does not mean that you cannot have a future normal healthy pregnancy. Miscarriages are often just the body's way of dealing with a pregnancy that is unhealthy or not developing correctly. You say that you did not think you could get pregnant, and I'm not sure why, but the fact that you did is very encouraging in that regard. Please do not give up hope for the future.
I wish you well and I will be thinking good thoughts for you.
