Persistent Foot Swelling After Metatarsal Fracture: Causes & Relief

Question
I broke the fifth metatarsal on my right foot about 15 weeks ago. I wore a cast for 8 weeks, then a boot for 2-3 weeks. Swelling was a problem during that time, causing the doctor to release the cast several times to relieve pressure. While in the cast, my first two toes were numb  for most of the time, and the doctor seemed to think that some nerve damage was done. I kept the foot elevated and iced, and even took a course of cortisone for the swelling. My foot continues to swell, with the normal accompanying aching pain. I've had 9 sessions of physical therapy without much change, and feeling has not returned to the two toes. I elevate, wear compression wraps and ice daily. Can you give me an idea of what treatments should be tried next? Thanks!

Answer
it sounds like neuropraxis to the nerves, ie, nerve damage..... since the nerves were not cut and separated..... they should slowly regenerate and a rate of about 1mm per month.... so you can measure the distance.... if it is 1 cm, then it may take 10 months to go back to normal..... good luck and patience is the key in this setting......
