Post-Abortion Recovery: Understanding Bleeding, Discharge, and Potential Infections

Question
Dear Dr, I did an abortion on June 1, 2012. i was 7 weeks pregnant and the doctor gave me the RU486 pill. he told me i would bleed for 2 weeks the most but turned out i didn't stop bleeding until August 11. a day later (august 12) I had a cottage cheese looking discharge about 3 days later there was a fishy smell added to the discharge. i went to my Gynecologist and she prescribed for me to take metronidazole 500mg twice daily for 7 days. the 7th day was Sunday (August 26) my period started Monday the 27th and ended Friday (August 31) now i am seeing a light brown/yellowish discharge. do u have any idea what this might be? I haven't had any type of sexual intercourse from May 25

Answer
The discharge can be normal after being treated for bacterial vaginosis.  Check to see if your doctor did a culture for gonorrhea and chlamydia.  If she did and they were negative, you have no need to worry.  If she did not, have her do that.  Chlamydia can cause prolonged bleeding after an abortion.  However the occasional woman can have bleeding up to 80 days (11 weeks) after a medical abortion.  You bleed 10 weeks and then had your period.
