Miscarriages & Rh Factor: Clarifying Myths & Prevention
QuestionI am 4 weeks pregnant now and I have carried one child to term and he was born with a c-section. After that I have had 2 miscarriages. 1st one at 7 weeks and 2nd at 12 weeks (2nd was only 8 weeks ago) Now I am pregnant again. I Have Rh- factor and my husband is Rh+. Do you think that I am miscarrying because of the Rh- factor? I had the rhogam shot after birth and after both miscarriages. Can you get the rhogam shot before 28 weeks? Thanks
AnswerRh- factor does not cause early miscarriages. If you have been sensitized, problems would not appear until later in pregnancy, after 26 weeks or so. At this point, your baby could become anemic from attacks from your antibodies. If you have had the rhogam shots after your birth and miscarriages, you should be okay, though. Your doctors can test you to see if you have been sensitized despite the shots, and would then monitor your pregnancy for problems.
