QuestionOne week ago I tested positive on a HPT. Two days later, I had a consultation at an abortion clinic to learn of my options. They said they saw they saw an early pregnancy, but didn't seem too sure (they wanted me to return for another US in 10 days).
3 or 4 days passed, and I started spotting, but it turned into what appeared to be a full-blown period. Cramping wasn't too bad, but I did pass a lot of red blood and clots. I had one or two major cramps, but nothing that was unbearable.
When this started, I went to my regular dr. and told her everything. She gave me a preg. test that came out negative. She sent me for an ultrasound, and they couldn't find anything in my uterus (but they did say that if I was any less than 5 or 6 weeks along that it wouldn't show up on the US). The US did show that my left ovary is larger than the right one, which is of concern, because I was complaining of aches on my left side (pelvic/abdomen area).
Was I pregnant? Am I still pregnant and its not showing up on the US? What's going on?
AnswerDear How did this happen to me,
It sounds as if you had an early miscarriage. About one in four pregnancies end this way. The original clinic may have only seen a "decidual reaction" on ultrasound, or a thickened lining of the uterus. If you were as early as it sounds, that is all there would be. When women miscarry at the stage you were, it is like having a heavy period. Your negative pregnancy test confirms this. The enlarged ovary could be cysts that can occur with menstrual cycles or pregnancy. If you continue to have pain on that side, follow up with your gyn. You are no longer pregnant. Good luck, Doctor Joan.
